Egypt isn't what it appears to be in the media...but that's no real surprise, since not much is. I moved here in the late 80's from Toronto, Canada, with my Canadian/Egyptian husband, my son and my daughter. The children adapted quickly and we decided that this country was a good place to live. Now I wouldn't change my home for anything.

Oh RATS!
Zipping through the news, I found a video on Reuters of the rat invasions in China. If you click on the title here, you can get to the site. The video is amazing.
Aside from the sheer horror of rivers of rats, it's worth thinking about the fact that China has basically made having dogs illegal. Now my pack of Rat Terriers would be in terrier heaven. Maybe they need an airlift from some of the terrier clubs. We have three species of rat in Egypt so we could have lots of rat problems except for the work of the baladi dogs and cats. Bless them.

Perhaps it's a good idea to leave the balady cats and dogs in the street then and not go about killing them.
By the way, I think it's a good idea to feed us with short yet frequent post from time to time.
Thankyou for your post :)
I am in cairo at the moment and I hope to try both the hamburger and the restuarant Abou Sid in Maadi. Are the taxi drivers likely to know these places or will I need to give the street/road names? And do you know them.
Shukran.
Abou el Sid in Maadi is on Road 7, while Lucille's is on Road 9. A Maadi cab driver would know them, but one from outside Maadi is often lost when he arrives in Maadi. Abou el Sid also has branches in Heliopolis, Zamalek, Dokki, and Sharm el Sheikh. If you use www.yallabina.com you can find out all sorts of interesting things to try.
Rats are an interesting "pest." Some people eat them as you would a quail, some people fear them as horseman of the plague, and others just think that they are creepy for no logical reason. I personally think that rats are a bit cute. When I was young, we would let a few go and hunt them down in the house. It was like a primal game of tag. My mother is terrified of them for good reason. When she a baby, a rat at some of her cheek. My uncle always said that it occurred on Armenian Thanksgiving.
