Very Bad Math

Following the news on Gaza has been disturbing. The Gazan death toll has been rising steadily but while there have been some reports of rocket attacks, reports of Israeli deaths have been lacking. The one report I could find regarding the Israeli deaths reported 12 deaths as of a week ago. One would imagine that the Israelis were suffering under heavy attack to justify the killing of so many in Gaza.
ًًً
This was passed to me by a friend and is from Al Jazeera's English edition:

"At least 300 children are among the more than 1,000 Palestinians who have died since Israel began to bombard the Gaza Strip on December 27.
Al Jazeera has obtained the names of 210 of the young victims, 44 of whom were under five years old. (The names are given and then the gender and the age.)

It took me a few hours to get all of these names into a format for the blog.
These names are only some of the children who have died in Gaza through no fault of their own. At least do take the time to read them and recognise their lives.

Thank you for this terrible, sad list. None of these children should have died. We can only hope that the new US administration will make it impossible for further crimes like this to be committed. Your video clip which talks of the PR war is very apposite - all the media, even the BBC, report this conflict in biased language. The true horror of it is hidden.

I live in Canada. So far away.. I feel helpless in doing anything to help the situation over there. Is there anything we can do to help??

When I was living in North America I believed the line that went around about the "free press" and I didn't question much. Once we moved out of the area and found that we had to rely on our own resources for information, a task that has been made miraculously easy by the internet and things like Google News http://news.google.com where you can get the news on just about any event from a hundred different viewpoints, I realised just how narrow a view is presented in the news in North America. As the Prophet said, "Seek knowledge, even unto China." Be aware, inform yourself and others. Sunlight is a powerful disinfectant. But it is work. It's so much easier to believe what you are told by those with vested interests in the status quo.

Maryanne,

thanks for this post. I agree with you - American media is lousy - and it is only possible for it to be so bad and get away with it, because so many Americans (including academics studying the media!) believe that the US system is the best in the world.

I have been watching the news about Gaza unfold with disbelief and utmost sadness. I feel for all those people who are trapped in an impossible situation without any way out. In the long run, this is bad for everybody involved, including Israel - no country can live in peace if they can't get on with their neighbours, and killing hundreds of civilians does not help with "winning hearts and minds".

The Israeli line that this is all Hamas' fault is not convincing, even though I am by no means a fan of Hamas. I just hope that the new US administration will stop unilaterally support Israel no matter what and will start working on peace for all.

Let me get this straight- Hamas brakes the cease fire, aand according to your philosophy of "and I have to admit to little sympathy for the Israeli's who feel that the death of a few of their people justifies the destruction of so many others" Israel has no right of self-protection? And please please, stop the mantra of "proportionality"- if so, then Israel should be lobbing rockets indiscrimanitely into Gazan population centers. Let's put the cards on the taable- when Hamas took control, they could have recognized Israel's fundamental right to exist, have open potrts, and turn Gaza into a mini-Singapore. But no. Take the money and buy weapons, and use your populace as Iranian tools. Go to sleep with the dog, wake up with the fleas.
